Description

The Hammer Strength Plate Loaded Iso-Lateral Leg Extension is a leg extension machine that lets you load the front of your thigh separately from the rest of your leg training, with its own work arm for each leg. You choose whether you extend both legs together, work alternately or train one leg on its own with its own weight. Intended for the serious home gym, the personal training studio and the semi-professional space where you want to target the quadriceps alongside squats and pressing exercises.

Iso-Lateral Leg Extension at a glance

  • Independent work arms for each leg: left and right move separately, so your strong leg cannot shield the weaker side.
  • Four ways to train: together, alternating, one leg on its own or with a different weight on each side, so you can tackle a difference deliberately.
  • Computer calculated movement path: the converging and diverging arc follows the natural line of knee extension instead of a fixed straight path.
  • Starting resistance of 1.8 kg per arm: unloaded, the machine moves almost weightlessly, so warming up and small steps up work well.
  • Up to 60 kg per arm: three 20 kg plates a side give room to keep building for years on an exercise with a long lever.
  • 11-gauge steel frame with powder coating: heavy gauge steel with an electrostatically applied layer, made for intensive use.
  • Rubber feet: the machine stays exactly where it stands, even when you extend powerfully.

What a leg extension adds to your leg training

Squats and leg presses always load your quadriceps together with your glutes and hamstrings. On a knee extension that company falls away: the quadriceps do the work on their own, across the whole range up to full extension. That makes the exercise worthwhile as a finisher on your leg day, when the heavy compound exercises are behind you and you want to add some targeted volume. Because the path is guided, you can run those last sets without your technique falling apart under fatigue.

Why iso-lateral makes a difference

On an ordinary leg extension with a single connected roller, your strong leg pushes the weaker side up with it, without you noticing. Here each side moves separately, so a leg that is lagging stands out immediately in the last reps. And you can steer it deliberately: an extra set for that side, or a different weight on each arm. For anyone with a clear difference between left and right, that is the main argument for this machine.

Choosing and building resistance

You load a maximum of three 20 kg plates per arm, on top of a starting resistance of 1.8 kg per arm. That takes you to 60 kg a leg, which on a knee extension with this lever is generous for almost everyone. The low starting resistance also means you can begin very small, handy if you are learning the movement or building back up after a quiet period. Weight plates do not come with the machine, and because you load each side you need them twice over.

Space and set-up

The machine measures 165 cm long, 152 cm wide and 137 cm high, and it weighs 137 kg. The height of 137 cm stays comfortably under a standard ceiling, so this is one of the machines that also fits a basement or garage. Do allow for the width of 152 cm plus clear space on both sides to change plates and to get in and out. At 137 kg unit weight you pick a final spot in advance on a level floor able to take the load.

Worth knowing

This machine is built for a single movement and so is no replacement for a multi gym. If you only have room for one or two machines, a more versatile machine gives you more exercises per square metre. The Leg Extension mainly makes sense as an addition once your leg training is already in place and you want to add targeted volume on the quadriceps. Budget for a separate investment in weight plates as well.

Frequently asked questions about the Iso-Lateral Leg Extension

How much weight can I load on this machine?

You load a maximum of three 20 kg plates per arm, so up to 60 kg a leg, on top of a starting resistance of 1.8 kg per arm. For a knee extension that is a generous range, advanced users included. Because each side is loaded separately, you are effectively buying the weight twice: if you want 60 kg a leg, you need 120 kg of plates. Plates are not supplied.

How much space do I need?

The machine is 165 x 152 x 137 cm. The height of 137 cm is modest for a strength machine, so a lowered ceiling is rarely the sticking point here. At the sides you need extra room to slide plates on and off and to get in and out. Allow around half a metre of clear space all round.

Is this machine suitable for beginners?

Yes, the guided path takes the stabilising out of your hands, so you can concentrate on your execution. With 1.8 kg starting resistance per arm you can practise virtually unloaded and then build up in small steps. Build the weight up calmly and work across the full range instead of doing half reps. That said, this is professional equipment for a single exercise, so a substantial investment for someone just starting out.

Can I train one leg on its own?

Yes, the work arms move independently of each other. You can extend both legs together, work alternately, train one leg on its own or load left and right with a different weight. That is useful when one leg is clearly lagging and you want to work that difference away. On a machine with a single connected roller that is not possible.

How does this differ from a leg curl?

The direction of the movement and the muscle group. A leg extension straightens the knee and loads the front of your thigh, a leg curl bends the knee and loads the hamstrings at the back. They complement each other: together you cover both sides of the thigh, which squats or leg presses alone will not do. If you only want one of the two, choose the movement that features least in your own schedule.

Do I have to anchor the machine to the floor?

That is not necessary. The machine stands on rubber feet and weighs 137 kg on its own, so it will not slide when you extend powerfully. More important is that the surface is level and able to take the load, certainly on a wooden upper floor. So pick a permanent spot in advance rather than planning to shift the machine about.
