Weight stack or loose weight plates?

Strength stations with a weight stack are the most user-friendly. You adjust the weight with a pin — quick and simple, even between sets. Machines with loose weight plates offer more flexibility in weight build-up but are somewhat more cumbersome for daily use. Also bear in mind that loose weight plates are not always included as standard.

Expansion options

Some strength stations are expandable with accessories such as a leg press, extra pulley or ab and back extension. That can be handy later if you want to expand your training. Check in advance whether the machine is expandable and whether the accessories for that model are still available. With used machines that is not always obvious.

Dimensions and placement

Measure your available space carefully, including the height. Strength stations are often larger than they appear in photos. What is the difference between a weight stack and loose weight plates?

A weight stack you adjust with a pin — quick and suitable for interval training or changing between sets. Loose weight plates are more flexible in weight build-up but more cumbersome to use. For daily home use, a weight stack is generally more comfortable.

Can I expand a used strength station later?

With many models that is possible, for example with a leg press or extra pulley. Whether expansion is possible differs per machine.
