Description

The Hammer Strength Plate Loaded Iso-Lateral Decline Chest Press is a chest press machine that loads the lower chest through a downward press path, while you sit upright instead of lying back on a declined bench. Each arm has its own loading point and moves independently, so your strong side cannot take over the work of your weaker one. Intended for the serious home gym, the personal training studio or the semi-professional space where chest training is heavy and run at fixed intervals.

Iso-Lateral Decline Chest Press at a glance

  • Downward press path in an upright position: you get the loading of a decline press on the lower chest, without having to lie back or steer a barbell above your face.
  • Iso-lateral movement path: separate loading points per side with a diverging and converging path, so left and right really do work independently.
  • Stabilising hip belt: you are strapped into the machine, so your strength goes into the push and your torso does not shift during heavy sets.
  • Starting resistance of 3 kg per arm: unloaded the movement is light, which keeps warm-up sets and technique work worthwhile.
  • Four 20 kg plates per arm: room to keep building on an exercise where you get heavy quickly.
  • Six storage pegs for plates: your weight hangs on the machine rather than on a separate rack, so changing between sets is quick.
  • 11-gauge steel frame with powder coating: heavy gauge steel with an electrostatically applied layer, built for intensive use by several people.
  • Anchor holes in the feet: you can bolt the machine to the floor for a completely quiet, stable set-up.

Decline pressing without a declined bench

A decline press with a barbell calls for a bench in a negative position, someone keeping an eye on you and the discomfort of hanging back with the blood running to your head. On this machine you sit upright and the press path runs down and forwards, so the load still lands on the lower part of the chest. You step in, clip the belt shut and press. For anyone who wants to target the lower chest but has no appetite for the faff of a decline bench, that is the main argument.

Loading left and right separately

The two loading points are completely separate and the arms move towards and away from each other during the push. That means you can train both sides at once, work alternately, or deliberately load unevenly if one side is falling behind. With a single connected handle your strong arm quietly compensates for the weaker one and a difference becomes permanent. Here you notice straight away in the last reps of a heavy set which side gives out first.

Posture and stability during the set

The upright seating position combined with the hip belt keeps you in place, even when you push hard with both arms at once. Without that belt you slide up the seat during heavy sets and lose part of your strength to holding yourself down. The pads are moulded foam, so there is no wrapped filling that starts to shift over time. The frame is built from 11-gauge steel with an electrostatically applied powder coating, chosen for adhesion and wear resistance in daily use.

Space and set-up

The machine measures 145 cm long, 170 cm wide and 173 cm high, and weighs 143 kg. At 173 cm build height it also fits a room with a lower ceiling, which makes it suitable for a basement or garage where taller strength machines will not go. Do allow clear space on both sides to slide plates on and off and to get in and out. The feet have holes for floor anchoring, although at 143 kg plus loaded plates the machine stands firmly without it.

Worth knowing

Weight plates are not included, and because you load per side you need them twice over. Beyond that, this is a machine for one specific pushing movement: for pulling work, shoulder pressing and leg exercises you will need other equipment. It only becomes interesting once you run chest training heavily several times a week and want to work the lower chest specifically. If you only have room for one or two machines, a multi gym gives you more exercises per square metre.

Frequently asked questions about the Iso-Lateral Decline Chest Press

Which muscles does this machine train?

Mainly the lower part of the chest, with the triceps and the front shoulder as supporting muscles. The press path runs down and forwards, which mimics the mechanics of a decline press without you lying back. The arms move towards each other during the push, so the chest stays under tension at the top of the movement as well. For pulling work and for shoulder pressing you will need additional equipment.

How much weight can I load?

You load a maximum of four 20 kg plates per arm. The starting resistance is 3 kg per arm, so unloaded the movement is light and warm-up sets are easy to run. Because each side is loaded separately, you are effectively buying the weight twice: if you want 60 kg per arm, you need 120 kg of plates. Plates are not included, so you buy those separately.

How much space and height do I need?

The machine is 145 x 170 x 173 cm. The build height of 173 cm is low for a strength machine, so a lowered ceiling is rarely a problem here. The width of 170 cm is more the point to watch: on both sides you need room to change plates and to get in and out. Allow around half a metre of clear space all round.

What is the hip belt for?

The belt keeps you in place in the seat while you push. During heavy sets you slide up or forwards without it, so part of your strength is lost to holding your own body down. With the belt on, virtually all your strength goes into the movement itself. You clip it shut before the set and release it afterwards, so it costs you next to no time.

Is this machine suitable for beginners?

Yes, a guided movement is actually friendlier for beginners than free weights, because you do not have to stabilise the movement path yourself and there is no barbell above your chest. The starting resistance is 3 kg per arm, so you can start light and build up in small steps. The upright seating position with the belt fixes your position, which makes the execution simpler. That said, this is a machine from the professional segment, so the investment is substantial for someone just starting out.

How does this differ from an ordinary chest press?

The movement path runs downwards instead of straight forwards, which puts the emphasis on the lower chest. On top of that, the loading points are separate per side, so your strong arm cannot help the weaker one. The machine is loaded with plates rather than a weight stack, which gives a more direct feel for the resistance but does mean changing plates between sets. If you mainly want to hit the upper chest, an incline version makes more sense.
