Description

The Hammer Strength Plate Loaded Iso-Lateral Low Row is a low row machine that lets you pull towards your torso from a low line, with an independent work arm on each side. That low pulling angle loads your lats across a wide range and at the same time asks for control of your shoulder blades, which makes the machine the logical counterpart to your pushing work. Intended for the serious home gym, the personal training studio and the semi-professional space where back training carries as much weight in the schedule as chest training.

Iso-Lateral Low Row at a glance

  • Independent work arms on each side: each arm pulls separately from the other, so your strong side cannot take over the work and differences become visible.
  • Four ways to train: both arms together, alternating, one arm on its own or with a different weight on each side, so you can make targeted adjustments.
  • Low pulling path: you work from a low angle towards your torso, which loads the lats and the upper back across a wide range.
  • Up to 100 kg per arm: five 20 kg plates a side, so heavy pulling sets stay possible for years.
  • Starting resistance of 3.6 kg per arm: unloaded the resistance is low, which makes warm-up sets and small steps up worthwhile.
  • Six storage pegs on the frame: your plates sit on the machine rather than around the room, so changing between sets is quick.
  • 11-gauge steel frame with powder coating: heavy gauge steel with an electrostatically applied layer, built for daily use by several people.
  • Compact footprint: at 127 by 122 cm the machine takes up less floor than most back machines.

Why the low pulling angle works differently

A lat pulldown pulls from above downwards, a low row pulls from low and in front of you towards your torso. That second line puts the lats under tension at a different length and asks more of your upper back and of the control over your shoulder blades. In practice you notice that at the end of the pull: you really have to bring your shoulder blades together instead of only bending your arms. For anyone already doing plenty of vertical pulling, this is the addition that loads the back from another direction.

Why iso-lateral makes a difference

On a back machine with a single connected handle, your strong arm quietly takes over part of the pull, and with back work you feel that poorly because you cannot see the muscles working. Here each side moves separately, so in the last reps you notice immediately that one arm is falling behind. You can load a different weight on each side or run an extra set for the weaker one. Over a few training blocks, that stops a difference from becoming permanent.

Choosing and building resistance

The starting resistance is 3.6 kg per arm and you load a maximum of five 20 kg plates per side. That takes you to 100 kg per arm, a generous load range that suits a pulling movement where your back can handle a lot of weight. Because the machine is loaded with plates rather than a weight stack, the resistance feels direct: you feel the weight in your hands without cables and pulleys in between. Weight plates are not included and you need them separately for each side.

Space and set-up

The machine measures 127 cm long, 122 cm wide and 168 cm high, and it weighs 152 kg. That is a compact footprint for a back machine, which means it can go in a smaller home gym too. The height of 168 cm stays under a standard ceiling, so that is rarely the sticking point here. Do keep space clear on both sides to slide plates on and off, and plan on a permanent spot: at 152 kg unit weight plus the loaded plates you do not move this machine in passing.

Worth knowing

This machine does one movement and does it well, but it is no replacement for a multi gym. For pushing work, shoulders and legs you will need additional equipment. Weight plates are not supplied, and because each side is loaded separately you buy the weight twice over: that is a real line in your budget. The machine only becomes interesting once back training is a fixed and heavy part of your schedule.

Frequently asked questions about the Iso-Lateral Low Row

How much weight can I load on this machine?

You load a maximum of five 20 kg plates per arm, so up to 100 kg a side, on top of a starting resistance of 3.6 kg per arm. That is plenty for heavy pulling work, advanced users included. Because you load both sides separately, you are effectively buying the weight twice: if you want 80 kg per arm, you need 160 kg of plates. Plates are not supplied.

How does this differ from a lat pulldown?

The direction of the pull. A lat pulldown pulls from above downwards, a low row pulls from low and in front of you towards your torso. That puts the emphasis in a different place: on the low row the upper back and the control over your shoulder blades work harder. The two complement each other, so plenty of schedules include both a vertical and a horizontal pulling exercise.

How much space do I need?

The machine is 127 x 122 x 168 cm, which is compact for a back machine. The height of 168 cm fits under almost any ceiling, in a basement or garage as well. At the sides you need extra room to change plates and to get in and out, so allow around half a metre of clear space all round. Measure your floor before you order, because at 152 kg moving it afterwards is no small job.

Is this machine suitable for beginners?

Yes, a guided pulling path is friendlier for beginners than a free rowing movement, because you do not have to stabilise the path yourself and your torso is supported. With 3.6 kg starting resistance per arm you can start light and build up in small steps. Pay particular attention to the finish of the movement: shoulder blades together rather than only bending your arms. That said, this is a machine from the professional segment, so the investment is substantial for someone just starting out.

Can I train with a different weight on each arm?

Yes, that is what the independent work arms are there for. You load left and right separately, so a weaker side can do the same number of reps with less weight. You can also pull alternately or train one arm on its own. That makes the machine useful if you want to tackle a left to right difference deliberately.

Do I have to anchor the machine to the floor?

That is not necessary. At 152 kg unit weight plus the loaded plates the machine stands stable on a level surface, even during a heavy pulling set. More important than anchoring is a solid, even floor able to take the load, certainly on a wooden upper floor. Choose a final set-up in advance so you do not have to move the machine.
