Description

The Hammer Strength Plate-Loaded Lateral Raise is a lateral raise machine that lets you load the side of your shoulders along a fixed path, without swinging dumbbells around or helping the weight up with your torso. Each arm moves separately from the other, so your strong side cannot take over the work of your weaker one. Intended for the serious home gym, the personal training studio or the semi-professional space where shoulder width and shoulder stability are a fixed part of the programme.

Plate-Loaded Lateral Raise at a glance

  • Iso-lateral movement path: each arm works independently, which brings left to right differences into view and lets you address them directly.
  • Back pad at 25 degrees: the angle lines the middle deltoid up with the movement, so the load lands where you want it.
  • Starting resistance of 0.5 kg per arm: unloaded the machine moves almost weightlessly, which with a small muscle group like the deltoid is the difference between usable and too heavy.
  • Up to three 10 kg plates per arm: a range that suits the exercise, because a lateral raise is done with control rather than with maximum kilos.
  • Four storage pegs for plates: your weight sits on the machine, so changing between sets is quick.
  • 11-gauge steel frame with powder coating: heavy gauge steel with an electrostatically applied layer, built for intensive use by several people.
  • Unit weight of 134 kg: the machine stays exactly where you put it, even when you get a bit fiercer in the last few reps.
  • Build height of 119 cm: low enough for a basement or garage where taller strength machines will not go.

Why a machine over dumbbells

Lateral raises with dumbbells often go wrong at the moment it gets heavy: you swing from your torso, you shrug your shoulders up and the deltoid does less and less. On a guided machine the movement path is fixed and your back rests against a pad, so those escape routes fall away. What is left is the muscle itself. That makes lighter loads more effective and means the last reps of a set still count instead of running away into technique.

Independent arms and left to right difference

The arms move separately from each other. With a single connected handle your strong shoulder quietly takes over part of the work, which you only notice once the difference is large. Here you see it straight away: one side falls behind in the last reps. And you can act on it, by choosing a different weight for each side or running an extra set for the side that is lagging. Over a training block of a few months, that stops a difference from becoming permanent.

Light loading that matches the muscle

The deltoid is small and works on a long lever, so the kilos stay low compared with pressing work. That is exactly why the starting resistance of 0.5 kg per arm matters: you can warm up unloaded and then build up in steps of a single plate. The machine takes up to three 10 kg plates per arm, which is ample for this exercise. In practice you train here with controlled reps and a short pause at the top, not with as much weight as possible.

Construction and finish

The frame is built from 11-gauge steel with an electrostatically applied powder coating, a combination chosen for adhesion and wear resistance in daily use. The machine weighs 134 kg itself, so it stands stable without you having to bolt it down. The four storage pegs keep your plates by the machine, which keeps changing between sets quick and stops loose stacks building up on the floor.

Space and placement

The machine measures 114 cm long, 142 cm wide and 119 cm high. That low build height makes it suitable for rooms with a lowered ceiling, where taller towers will not go. The width of 142 cm is the measurement to watch here: you need to be able to reach the weight posts on both sides. So allow clear space to the left and right to change plates and to get in and out.

Worth knowing

Weight plates are not included, and because you load per arm you need them twice over. For this exercise they are lighter plates, so the additional investment stays limited. Beyond that, this is a machine for a single movement: you train the side of your shoulders with it and nothing else. If you only have room for one or two machines, a multi gym or a cable station gives you more exercises per square metre.

Frequently asked questions about the Plate-Loaded Lateral Raise

How much weight can I load on this machine?

You load a maximum of three 10 kg weight plates per arm, on top of a starting resistance of 0.5 kg per arm. That sounds like little, but it suits the exercise: with a lateral raise you work with a long lever and a small muscle group, so the kilos stay low. Plates are not included and you need them separately for each side. In practice a set of 5 and 10 kg plates will take you a long way.

Why does a low starting resistance matter?

Because the middle deltoid is small and is overloaded quickly. At 0.5 kg per arm the machine moves virtually unloaded, so you can run through the movement path first and then build up in small steps. On machines with a high starting resistance you are immediately too heavy for this exercise. That also makes it usable for light reps at the end of a shoulder session.

How much space do I need?

The machine is 114 x 142 x 119 cm. The build height of 119 cm is low, so a lowered ceiling is rarely a problem. On both sides you need extra room to slide plates on and off and to get in and out. So allow around half a metre of clear space to the left and right.

Is this machine suitable for beginners?

Yes, and for beginners in particular a guided lateral raise is pleasant, because the path is fixed and you cannot swing from your torso. The starting resistance of 0.5 kg per arm lets you start very light, and the back pad at 25 degrees makes sure you work at the right angle. That said, this is professional equipment for a single exercise, so the investment is substantial for someone just starting out.

How does this differ from a selectorized lateral raise?

In the way you choose your weight. This machine is loaded with weight plates, which gives a more direct feel for the resistance but does mean changing plates. A version with a weight stack is set with a pin, which is quicker but less easy to fine tune for each side. Because the arms move separately here, you can pick a different weight for each side, which a single stack does not allow.

Do I have to anchor the machine to the floor?

You do not have to. At 134 kg unit weight plus the loaded plates, the machine stands stable on a level surface. The forces in this exercise are also limited compared with pressing or pulling. Do choose an even floor that can take the load, certainly on a wooden upper floor.
