Description
The Hammer Strength Plate Loaded Pullover is a pullover machine that lets you train the latissimus specifically with a downward pulling movement, without your forearms and biceps taking over the work. You push with your elbows against padded working arms instead of pulling on handles, which keeps the tension on the latissimus. With a seat angle of 30 degrees and a belt driven cam, this machine is intended for the serious home gym, the personal training studio or the semi-professional space where back training has to be more than just pulldowns and rows.
Plate Loaded Pullover at a glance
- Working arms without handles: you put out force with your elbows, so your grip and arms cannot take over the movement and the lats do the work.
- Belt drive with a cam: the resistance follows the natural strength curve and runs smoothly, without the jerky feel of a tight cable path.
- Seat angle of 30 degrees: the tension stays on the muscle throughout the whole range instead of dropping away halfway.
- Limited shoulder extension: the path keeps the movement within a controlled range, which works more comfortably during heavy sets.
- Stabilising seat belt: you stay in place on the seat and can put all your strength into the movement.
- Low starting resistance of 8.2 kg: unloaded the machine moves lightly, so warm-up sets and technique work are easy to run.
- 11-gauge steel frame with powder coating: heavy gauge steel with an electrostatically applied layer, built for intensive use by several people.
- Four storage pegs for plates: your weight sits on the machine, so changing between sets is quick.
Training the lats without your arms joining in
With pulldowns and rowing movements it is often your grip that decides when the set stops: the forearms give up before the back does. The Pullover tackles that differently, with working arms that have no handles. You rest your elbows against the pads and push the arm down, so the force runs from your upper arm straight into the latissimus. The result is that you can load the muscle to the end of the set instead of stopping because your hands give out. For anyone who has been training a while and notices back work stalling on grip, that is the main argument for this machine.
Belt drive and the strength curve
The resistance runs via a belt in combination with a cam matched to the natural strength curve of the movement. In practice that means: where you are strong it feels heavy and where you are weak it feels less so, instead of an even load that pins you to your weakest point. A belt drive also runs smoothly and needs little maintenance, which is welcome in a space where the machine is in use every day. The starting resistance of 8.2 kg keeps the entry low, so you can build up in small steps.
Seating position and positioning
The seat sits at an angle of 30 degrees. That angle is not cosmetic: it makes sure the tension stays on the muscle throughout the whole range, instead of dropping away at the top or the bottom. A stabilising belt holds you on the seat, so you do not come up during heavy sets and your strength stays in the movement. The seat adjusts at several points, so you set the height to your upper arm length rather than the other way round. On top of that the shoulder extension has been kept limited, which keeps the movement within a controlled range.
Construction and set-up
The frame is built from 11-gauge steel with an electrostatically applied powder coating, a combination chosen for adhesion and wear resistance in daily use. The pads are moulded foam, so there is no wrapped filling that starts to shift over time. The feet have holes with which you anchor the machine to the floor, and rubber feet stop it sliding and protect your surface. The machine measures 140 cm long, 163 cm wide and 147 cm high, and weighs 168 kg. At 147 cm build height it also fits a room where taller strength machines will not go under the ceiling.
Worth knowing
Weight plates are not included, so budget for a separate investment. Beyond that, this is a machine for one specific movement: it does not replace a pulldown or a rowing machine but complements them. It becomes interesting once back training is a fixed and heavy part of your schedule and you notice that grip or arms are limiting you. If you only have room for one or two machines, a multi gym is more versatile.
Frequently asked questions about the Plate Loaded Pullover
Which muscles does this machine train?
First and foremost the latissimus dorsi, the broad muscle of the back. Because you push with your elbows against the working arms instead of pulling on handles, the tension stays there and your forearms and biceps do not take the movement over. The upper back and the rib cage work along as stabilisers. For legs, shoulders and arms you will need additional equipment.
Why are there no handles on the working arms?
That is a deliberate choice, to isolate the lats. As soon as you pull on something, your grip and your elbow flexors join in and the set often stops because your forearms are done. By setting your elbows into the padded arm, the force goes straight from your upper arm into the back muscle. In practice you feel more quickly where the load is supposed to sit.
How much space do I need?
The machine is 140 x 163 x 147 cm. The build height of 147 cm is low for a strength machine, so a lowered ceiling in a basement or garage is rarely a problem here. Do allow clear space on both sides to change plates and to get in and out. At 168 kg unit weight the machine stands stable without anchoring, although the feet do have holes so you can bolt it down.
Is this machine suitable for beginners?
Yes, the guided movement is actually pleasant for beginners because you do not have to stabilise the movement path yourself. The starting resistance is 8.2 kg, so you can start light and build up in small steps. The adjustable seat and the belt make sure your position is right before you do the first rep. That said, this is equipment from the professional segment, so for someone just starting out the investment is substantial.
Are weight plates included?
No, plates are not supplied. The machine has four storage pegs where you can keep your own plates, so the weight stays within reach. Take the purchase of a plate set into account in your budget. Standard Olympic plates fit on the loading pegs.
What will I notice of the belt drive?
Above all that the movement runs smoothly and evenly, without play at the start of a rep. The belt works together with a cam that matches the resistance to the natural strength curve, so the load moves with the strong and weak phases of the exercise. A belt system also needs little maintenance. For you that means: set up, load and train.
